Our mission this morning was to do our laundry as we were all out of undies....other things can be re-worn, but there is a limit. We had to catch the tube to Russell Square as there are no laundromats in our area. Cam seemed a bit grumpy & asked why I couldn't just pay the hotel to do it....too bad, I wanted him to experience a laundromat...and not waste money! When we got to Russell Square station there was a massive crowd for the lifts so we thought we'd take the stairs as we are so good at them....a sign did say 'emergency use only' but we saw a few go up them. Big mistake! It turned out to a spiral staircase up the equivalent of 15 floors....definitely breathless at the top, especially carrying all our washing. We found the laundromat and loaded up a machine. It was quite a nice laundry - more modern and very clean- way better than the one we used to use in Putney. While it was washing we went across the road to a cafe for breakfast. Very nice food and coffee, so we started to feel better.
Returned to our washing & loaded it into 2 driers for 15 minutes. All done & folded we made our way back to the hotel. We had to drop it & run as were meeting Sharon (a girl I used to work with at SCW) at the Tower of London. She is working for KPMG in London & took a 3 hour lunch break to see us. It was so nice to see her and catch up on all her news....she is a good friend of Judy, so look forward to telling her all the news when I get home. As an employee of KPMG she could get us free tickets into the Tower, saving us £20 each. We had a big walk around the various towers, saw the Crown Jewels, the ravens, armoury and got some good pictures. I bought a bell puller (fabric hanging thing) for my lounge wall in the tower shop...Cam didn't believe how much I paid for it (£70), but I can see it in my house and once again my birthday money meant I didn't hesitate. It folds up well in my suitcase, so I'm very happy.
We then caught the tube to Mansion House which is where St Paul's Cathedral is. We had a quick peek inside but didn't bother with a tour & then went across the road so I could buy us all some lunch...with a view of the Cathedral. We had a very nice lunch & coffee and then it was time for Sharon to go back to work. She was a bit sad saying goodbye, as she misses her NZ friends, but we'd had a lovely time. Cam was very good letting us chat away non stop...and he just tagged along.
From here we wandered the nearby streets, stood on the Millenium Bridge...walked the Fleet St area and eventually came upon a bus stop that had buses to Leicester Square. We hadn't been on a bus yet and this gave us a good ride past many of the big sights. We got off at Leicester Square and went to the half price ticket booth to see if I could get a ticket to Miss Saigon....success...very happy me with a ticket for tonight. It was my favourite show of all times and only cost me £28. Not such a good seat tonight, but still a good view of the stage.
We then walked back to our hotel looking for some nice food for Cam's dinner. Got a decadent looking chocolate gateau for his dessert too. He's happy to watch some TV programmes via the Internet tonight....preferable to him than going to a show.
Miss Saigon was just as good 25 years later. I knew all the songs & the helicopter scene was just as incredible as I remembered. I am so glad I went....even if I got a little bit lost on the way to the theatre...still got there in plenty of time. Makes me want to go to more shows, but we only have one more night in London, so may not be possible.
